BICYCLES » chapter 01
Bicycle design has been one of the highlights of my career so far. I think it is special to me because, not only did I ride a lot growing up in Oregon, but it was also my first professional design job. I landed an internship at Kestrel bicycles in 1989 where I worked for one summer and then continued to freelance off and on for over a decade. The thing I like the most about designing a bicycle is that it is a product I can feel good about. It is rare that you will ever see a Kestrel in a landfill. Bicycles promote health for the rider and for the environment when used by cycling commuters. When I first started to work on bicycle designs I did not know how to render in Photoshop and most of my time was spent doing traditional drafting at a drafting board and in the shop with the pattern makers. I would take my one-to-one scale drawings and build the frame designs in wood to best illustrate my design ideas. |
