CHAPTER»07 card collection
While hanging out at our booth during Comic-Con 2005 in San Diego, California, I started doing little ship sketches on the back of my business cards and giving them away. The 108 ship cards shown here were done specifically for this book. Each design was sketched directly on the back of a card designed by Fancygraphics and printed just for this collection. I began each illustration using Pilot Hi-Tec-C ink pens. After the design and line drawing were done, I rendered it with markers, a little white pencil and white gouache. The last touches were to add the gouache background, tint the glass area, and of course sign it and add the number. There were some casualties along the way—I seem to recall about a half-dozen so ugly they actually flew…off my desk and into the trash! All in all, these were a lot of fun to create. The most enjoyable part of the process was that these were done with traditional media and each one is an original. This is not the case with the digital art that I so often do now. If you are one of the 108 people who purchased one of the original cards within the limited edition of my books, thank you. For those of you without an original, I hope you enjoy the reproductions within this chapter. Who knows…maybe there will be another card collection in my future… |
